So great that you found us!

Before I tell you more about our goals and missions, let me introduce myself. I’m Desy and I am the founder of our NGO Bali Paws.

Bali paws is the reason why we created Batu Bali in the first place. But before we get there, let's walk down memory lane a little…

I moved to Bali almost a decade ago. A few years after enjoying all the beauty (and parties) this magical island has to offer, I found a tiny dumped puppy in the trash who needed help. I scooped her up and rushed her to the nearest vet clinic. Little did I know that taking care of this sick puppy would change my life completely.

Suddenly my sister and I we found more and more dogs who needed help. Dumped puppies in rivers, in plastic bags, Rice fields, on the side of the road… you name it. Pass forward a bit and  I found myself living together with my sister and 35+ dogs under one roof while continue to work our “normal jobs”.

As you can imagine the monthly (vet) costs were hard to cover and aside from financial help we also needed to extend our pool of possible new adopters for all the dogs we were taking in.

Long story short: Bali Paws was born.

Since 6 years we have been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs here in Bali. Over time, we grew and added a few members to our team and even rented a house for the pups. It’s not a shelter in the classic sense, therefore we call it: the Puppy House. Our rescues live there together with two of our team members. They go on daily beach walks, and we basically prepare them for their future until they are ready to leave us and move to their forever families.

That all might sound nice and it for sure changed the life of hundreds of dogs over the years, but we came to the realization that that’s just not enough! Rescuing is just not enough. It’s like putting a band-aid on the actual issue: unwanted and therefore dumped & sick puppies.

But how can we fix this problem?

Well, there are a few issues we need to do tackle.

1. Mass sterilization days:

Spaying and neutering would reduce the population. Call me a dreamer, but hopefully that will reduce the number of dumped babies, which eventually leads to fewer dogs who need rescuing.

2. Vaccination:

There are many (contagious) diseases that can be prevented by simply vaccinating the dogs. Also: RABIES! Yes! Rabies outbreaks are still a big issue in Bali and also the reason why and how the government justifies the mass culling of (healthy) dogs.

3. Education:

We might not be able to change the older generation's view on (stray) dogs, but we believe that we can change how children see dogs by showing them how to behave around dogs if they are scared, for example and how amazing and awesome it is to have a (Bail) dog in their lives.

If the next generation would actually like Bali dogs, the dogs' life quality here on the Island would improve so much. In theory, this sounds nice, but how to execute these plans in reality? How to get enough funding for these expensive projects?

Well, like always in life, if you want to change something you can’t sit around and wait for it to happen, because that might never will. We needed a plan to generate more monthly donations.

So that is when I got together with my best friends, started brainstorming, and we came up with a plan and a product: Batu Bali was born.

A simple yet pretty bracelet that not only provides local artisans with jobs, but also allows us to do more and end the suffering of so many Bali dogs and cats in the long run. I’m theory because there is one important component missing: YOU!

Yes, You!

Without your purchase in our shop, this won’t be possible. Batu Bali goes hand in hand with Bali Paws, means all profits of every bracelet sold will get donated to our NGO. This way you buy a pretty bracelet and simultaneously make a donation. Win-win!

We also want to be as transparent as possible with you, please head over to @bali.paws and see for yourself how you are contributing to our mission.

Last but not least: thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping and supporting our cause!

Together, we can make a difference!

Desy, Artem & Roman
